| Although
there is seating for six personnel in the cab of Engine 1, only three seats
are equipped with built-in self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). SCBA
packs for the remaining three positions are stored in this compartment. Each
pack contains approximately 30 minutes worth of normal air compressed at
4,500 pounds per square inch. Also stored in this compartment are a set of lifting air bags. These heavy-duty reinforced rubber bags can be filled using a SCBA air cylinder. Placed under overturned vehicles or in machinery, they are capable of of moving or lifting many thousands of pounds as they inflate. Finally, two sets of "irons" are stored in this compartment. A set of irons consists of an axe and a halligan tool strapped together. Both of these tools are used for forcible entry.
