Engine Company 1 was created on October 30, 2004, which allowed for the separation of the Department of Public Safety into independent police and fire departments nearly two months later. Engine Company 1 is responsible for protection of the city's northside, including the Morgan commercial area near Interstate 40 and many of the large occupancies in the Maumelle Industrial Park.

The company consists of 10 firefighters across three shifts. This staffing allows for a minimum of two firefighters on duty 24 hours a day.

The firefighters of Engine Company 1 currently staff the 2006 Smeal/Spartan pumper and share quarters with Engine Company 2 in the Police & Fire Building at 100 Millwood Circle. Engine Company 1 is scheduled to relocate to the new fire department headquarters on Murphy Drive upon its completion in late 2009.
