Engine Company 1 was created on October 30, 2004, which allowed for the separation of the Department of Public Safety into independent police and fire departments nearly two months later. Engine Company 1 is responsible for protection of the city's northside, including the Morgan commercial area near Interstate 40 and many of the large occupancies in the Maumelle Industrial Park. 

The company consists of 13 firefighters across three shifts. This staffing allows for a minimum of two firefighters on duty 24 hours a day at Fire Station 1.

The firefighters of Engine Company 1 currently staff a 2018 Pierce PUC Rescue Pumper from their quarters at Fire Station 1 at 2000 Murphy Drive. They formerly shared quarters with Engine Company 2 at 100 Millwood Circle but were relocated to the new station on March 12, 2010.
