Engine Company 1 consists of the 17 career firefighters of the Maumelle Fire Department. These members are responsible for providing fire and rescue services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the citizens and guests of our city. They perform this duty using three rotating shifts with each shift normally working a 24-hour tour of duty followed by 48 hours off duty.

Allowing for vacation leave and sick time, the department maintains a minimum of three career firefighters on duty at a time. When at least five firefighters are on duty, three members are assigned to Engine 1 while the remaining firefighters on duty will place Engine 2 or Truck 1 in service. Both Truck 1 and Engine 2 are normally reserve rigs only placed in service on an as-needed basis. With the hiring of four additional firefighters in 2008 as well as the addition of three captain positions and two engineer positions, Engine Company 1 will be split in two. The result will be two engines staffed around the clock.

Engine Company 1 was created October 30, 2004 when the five members of the 2004 recruit class -- Scott Eaton, Shane Holmes, Adam Swalls, Josh Woods & Austin Woody -- were assigned to each of the three shifts.
