02 December 2007 Santa Escort
Santa Claus briefly traded in his sleigh for a seat on Maumelle's Engine 1 before making his
grand entrance December 2 at the community Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
Maumelle firefighters assume Santa escort duty
Maumelle firefighters had the privilege of escorting the most poplar man in the world (at least during this time of year) Saturday, December 2.
Mr. Kris Kringle, better known in these parts as Santa Claus, briefly abandoned his sleigh in favor of a seat on Maumelle's Engine 1 for his grand entrance at the Community Christmas Tree Lighting at the Maumelle Community Center.
Maumelle Engine 1 and Truck 1, as well as two patrol cars from the Maumelle Police Department, escorted Santa from an undisclosed sleigh landing zone to the community center.
The Maumelle Fire Department is staffed 24 hours a day, every day -- including Christmas Eve. As the good boys and girls of Maumelle wait for Santa on December 24th, Maumelle firefighters will continue their duty to keep the city safe for residents as well as any special guests that might "fly" through town.

21 November 2007 House Fire
Firefighters from Maumelle and North Little Rock responded to a house fire shortly before 4 p.m. at this residence at 4 Fairway Drive. Additional photos from the fire can be found HERE.
Lightning sparks Thanksgiving Eve house fire
A neighbor watched as lightning struck the residence at 4 Fairway Drive on the afternoon of November 21, igniting the ceder shingle roof of the two-story home.
The four career firefighters staffing Engine 1 were met with heavy flames when they arrived on scene. Assistance was immediately requested from North Little Rock Engine 4 and off-duty firefighters from Maumelle were recalled to work.
Personnel stretched multiple handlines and used master streams from Engine 1 and Truck 1 to knock down the main body of the fire and protect neighboring homes. Crews then when inside to extinguish the remainder of the fire.
Although the home suffered severe damage, the quick actions of the firefighters contained fire damage to the second floor. Firefighters were also able to salvage a number of possessions in the residence -- protecting them from fire & water damage.
In all, Engine 1, Engine 2, Truck 1, Brush 1 and the Mobile Air Unit responded to Fairway Drive staffed by the four on-duty firefighters, seven volunteer firefighters and eight off-duty career firefighters. North Little Rock Engine 4 and Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene as mutual aid. Maumelle Fire Chief George Glenn, Division Chief John Payne and North Little Rock's Battalion Chief also responded.
While on scene at the Fairway fire, the Maumelle Fire Department was dispatched to investigate the smell of smoke in a residence on Emerald Drive. Maumelle firefighters assembled a team from the house fire and responded with Engine 2. North Little Rock Engine 4 also left the house fire to respond. Following an investigation at the second incident, no fire was found and the cause of the odor could not be determined.

An unidentified Maumelle volunteer firefighter dons his self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
before joining firefighting efforts at Stoneledge Drive garage fire Saturday morning.
Maumelle firefighters save Stoneledge home
A quick response by the Maumelle Fire Department saved a Stoneledge Drive home Saturday (Aug. 4) as personnel contained a fire to the garage and prevented its spread into the residence.
Three on-duty firefighters initially responded to multiple reports of a fire at 1 Stoneledge Drive shortly before 10:30 a.m. After seeing the smoke while responding along Edgewood Drive, firefighters arrived on scene to find visible fire in the garage.
Firefighters stretched a 1.75" attack line into the garage, eventually knocking down the fire with approximately 600 gallons of water. Although fire damage was contained to the garage area, the remainder of the home suffered smoke damage.
The on-duty staffing of three firefighters were supplemented on scene by Maumelle volunteers, some of which staffed Truck 1. North Little Rock's Engine 4 temporarily covered the city of Maumelle until off-duty personnel could respond and staff reserve apparatus.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters bump monthly record up to 121 runs
Less than a year after setting the previous record for most runs in a month, the Maumelle Fire Department set a new high mark in July by responding to 121 requests for service.
The previous record of 119 calls was reached in August 2006, a month that saw firefighters respond to nearly two dozen calls in a two-hour span on August 11 during a severe thunderstorm.
While setting the new mark last month, firefighters responded to eight motor vehicle accidents with injuries in the city -- four times the monthly average for the first six months of 2007. July also marks the third consecutive month of triple-digit run numbers for the department. Through July 31, the department averaged 98 runs per month.

Truck 1, volunteers respond to NLR church fire
Maumelle's Truck 1 and four volunteer firefighters responded late Saturday afternoon (July 20) as mutual aid on a multi-alarm church fire in the Levy section of North Little Rock.
According to reports on NLRFD.com, no fewer than seven of the ten fire stations in North Little Rock had companies operating at the fire at 2001 Parkway Drive, which reportedly started at around 4 p.m from a lightning strike during a thunderstorm. Despite the efforts of firefighters, the building was lost.
In addition to Maumelle's response to the scene, the Sherwood Fire Department provided coverage at North Little Rock Station 9 on JFK Blvd. and the Veterans Administration Fire Department from Fort Roots covered a portion of the city from Station 3 on 15th St. near Pike Ave.

July 12, 2007:

The newest member of the Maumelle Fire Department's fleet is a 1996 Pierce Quantum pumper purchased
from the Travis County Emergency Services District in Pflugerville, Texas. The new truck arrived in
Maumelle July 19.
"New" reserve pumper arrives home in Maumelle
Maumelle Captain Eugene Stacy, Firefighter Shane Holmes and Firefighter Jeremy New arrived in Maumelle Thursday afternoon (July 19) with the department's newest piece of rolling stock.
The trio had driven the 1996 Pierce Quantum approximately eight hours from Pflugerville, Texas -- a suburb near Austin -- after receiving training on operating the apparatus the day before. The apparatus was purchased earlier this month from the Travis County Emergency Services District in Pflugerville.
No date has been set for the new pumper to go in service. Mobile radios must be installed, any modifications necessary to store equipment will have to be made and all personnel -- career and volunteer -- will be trained on the vehicle before it officially assumes the Engine 2 title.

Preparations made to pick up "new" pumper
After the Maumelle City Council officially approved on July 2 the allocation of $100,000 to purchase a used fire pumper in Texas, Maumelle firefighters are now making preparations to take possession of the apparatus and deliver it to Arkansas.
The rig, a 1996 Pierce Quantum, was purchased from the Travis County Emergency Services District in Pflugerville, Texas. It will replace Maumelle's Engine 2, which has been plagued with maintenance issues for several years and has spent more than 100 days of 2007 out of service.
A group of Maumelle firefighters will fly to Texas Tuesday, July 17 and will spend the following day receiving training on the apparatus from Travis County ESD personnel. The Maumelle contingent will begin the long drive from Pflugerville, a suburb northeast of Austin, Thursday morning.
Once the Pierce engine is placed in service, the fire department has plans to sell the current Engine 2, a 1994 E-One Hush.

Maumelle firefighters responded to this roll-over accident shortly after 4:30 a.m. Thursday (July 12)
morning, treating the driver of the vehicle for apparently non life-threatening injuries.
One injured in early morning roll-over accident
Five Maumelle firefighters staffing Engine 1 and Truck 1 responded shortly after 4:30 a.m. Thursday (July 12) morning to a report of a roll-over accident on North Odom Blvd. near its intersection with Lake Valley Dr.
Upon arriving on scene, firefighters found that the two occupants had already freed themselves from the vehicle and were sitting on a nearby walking path. The vehicle, a KIA Sorento mini-van, appeared to have rolled over multiple times from the south-bound lanes, landing on its side off the west shoulder facing the wrong direction.
Both occupants stated that they had been wearing seatbelts and only the driver required medical treatment by firefighters before being transported to a local hospital by Metropolitan EMS for apparently non life-threatening injuries.
Maumelle volunteers were also paged for the incident with three members responding and staffing Engine 2 to provide coverage for any other calls that may have occurred in the city.

Former resident sentenced on arson charges
Elisha D. Martin Batson, formerly of Maumelle, was sentenced on Friday (June 22) to thirteen years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of arson and one count of fraud.
Two of the arson counts stem from fires set in Maumelle in 2005 and 2006. The Maumelle Fire Department responded to residential house fires at 4 Smoking Oaks Cove on November 14, 2005 and at 124 Limoges Court on January 3, 2006. In both cases, firefighters found the homes heavily involved with fire upon their arrival with investigators later determining the fires to be arson. The third arson charge came after a third dwelling burned in the city of Cammack Village.
Lieutenant Greg McPhail of the Maumelle Police Department and Captain Eugene Stacy of the Maumelle Fire Department were the lead investigators in the case. Their efforts resulted in the charges being filed against Batson.
In addition to the prison sentence, Batson will be required to make restitution fo the insurance companies who had to cover the losses. The property losses in the fires exceeded $500,000.

June 20, 2007:
After month away, Engine 1 returns to service
Engine 1, the 2006 Smeal that serves as the city's front-line pumper, returned to service Wednesday night (June 20) after four weeks of repairs.
The pumper abruptly quit while firefighters were responding to rescue a child trapped inside a locked car May 23 in the Osage Falls neighborhood. Maumelle police officers were able to respond and rescue the child as firefighters and their rig were left stranded on the side of the road.
The rig, with it's replacement Cummins diesel engine under the cab, did not have to wait long to go to work after its return to Maumelle. Less than two hours after being restocked with equipment, fuel and water, it responded to a residential fire alarm on Beaulieu Court. During their investigation, firefighters found a house full of smoke caused by food left unattended on the stove. Personnel cleared the smoke from the residence and returned to service.

17 June 2007 Fire
Firefighters return their equipment to service following a house fire Sunday (June 17) at 4 Hightrail
Cove. The fire department was called after neighbors noticed smoke coming from the residence.
MFD makes quick work of Father's Day house fire
Maumelle firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke in the area of the Hightrail neighborhood shortly before Noon on Sunday (June 17). When the first arriving unit arrived in the area, firefighters found heavy smoke pouring from the residence at 5 Hightrail Cove.
The five career firefighters on duty quickly went to work on the scene while waiting for volunteer firefighters, Engine Company 4 from North Little Rock and recalled off-duty career personnel to respond and assist.
Firefighters found cars in the driveway and neighbors expressed concern that there could be someone inside, so a rapid search was conducted using a thermal imaging camera -- a device that detects the heat of victims and fire through the smoke.
As firefighters searched inside, the fire extended through the attic and broke through the roof on the rear side. A 1.75" attack hose line was deployed and stretched into the kitchen, where the fire began. Firefighters soon had the fire under control, limiting fire damage to the kitchen, attic and roof. The rest of the time on scene was spent checking for fire spread and extension and extinguishing smaller areas of fire.
In all, five on-duty personnel, five volunteer firefighters, five off-duty personnel recalled to duty, three members of Engine Company 4 and Division Chief John Payne responded to the fire. Although the cause has not been officially declared, the fire appeared to be accidental in nature.
This fire is the second working fire in a month where the North Little Rock Seagrave pumper on loan to Maumelle has been first-due.

Firefighters complete incident command training
Twenty-seven members of the Maumelle Fire Department -- including all fifteen active career firefighters, 10 members of the volunteer division and both chiefs -- recently hosted and completed the Incident Management System 300 class.
The purpose of the class, which is the third in a series designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was to expand on the previous training of participants on the federally-adopted system of handling emergencies that involve multiple jurisdictions and/or multiple emergency services agencies.
Participants worked in small groups and were tasked with managing simulated incidents including plane crashes and train derailments. Students were required to pass a comprehensive exam to successfully complete the course and receive certification from the state.
The course was held June 9-10 at the Maumelle Water Management training room on Hyman Drive and was taught by George Cossey of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and Bill Meusham of the Pulaski County Office of Emergency Management.

23 May 2007 House Fire
North Little Rock Engine 103 pumps on a kitchen fire at 6 Pinehurst Way Wednesday (May 23)
evening. Engine 103 was on loan to Maumelle from the North Little Rock Fire Department after
Maumelle's Engine 1 stopped working while enroute to a rescue. Engine 2, the MFD's reserve
pumper, is also out of service -- as it has been for more than 100 days this year -- due to
mechanical issues.
NLR pumper on loan is first due at Pinehurst fire
Times aren't good for the Maumelle Fire Department fleet.
The department's reserve engine, a 1994 Emergency-One Hush pumper, has spent more than 100 days out of service so far this year and is currently in the shop with mechanical issues. So, when Engine 1 broke down while enroute to a rescue call Wednesday and had to be towed away, it left the fire department with only one pumping apparatus. Such a situation brings an awful case of deja vu.
A retired reserve pumper and a broken down front-line pumper (the Emergency-One) left Maumelle with only one pumping apparatus in the summer of 2005. On the night of July 11, that one rig responded to a house fire on Maranes Circle. Because of a broken hydrant and no second fire engine, Maumelle firefighters had to wait on engine companies from North Little Rock to arrive and lay hose to help bring the fire under control.
So, with only Truck 1 -- a 1990 LTI quint -- on the front line, Maumelle turned to their neighbors and asked for help. As they've done twice before, Chief Joe McCall and the North Little Rock Fire Department loaned Maumelle their 1985 Seagrave "standby engine" for the MFD's use.
Approximately two hours after Maumelle put the NLR pumper in service -- labled Engine 3 on the radio -- the loaner was first due on a fire in the kitchen at 6 Pinehurst Way.
Upon arrival at Pinehurst Way, firefighters found moderate smoke showing from the front and side of the residence. Engine 3 stretched a pre-connect into the house while Truck 1 laid five-inch supply line from the hydrant into the scene. With a vehicle in the home's garage, firefighters performed a search for possible victims -- the house turned out to be unoccupied -- while an attack team made quick work of the fire and limited fire damage to the kitchen.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

May 21, 2007:
Council authorizes chief to shop for pumper
After hearing that the Maumelle Fire Department's reserve pumper -- a 1994 Emergency-One Hush pumper -- had racked up more than $45,000 in repair bills over the last five years, the Maumelle City Council on Monday (May 21) authorized Fire Chief George Glenn to shop for a used replacement.
Engine 2 has spent more than 100 days out of service this year and is currently in the shop with mechanical issues. As the costs of repairs build, the confidence in the engine's ability to perform it's emergency functions has dropped. The pumper broke down while responding to a medical emergency in 2005 and died while pumping at a trash fire in February 2006. The engine is currently in the shop because it intermittently fails to start.
Chief Glenn will be shopping for a pumper in the $100,000 price range and with an expected lifespan of 7-10 years in Maumelle.

Eleven Pine Forest Elementary fourth-graders passed the 2007 SurvivalKids final exam with perfect
scores and were recognized along with the rest of their classmates during a special assembly at
the school May 15. A second assembly will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary School on May 30
to honor students participating in the SurvivalKids program on that campus.
Pine Forest 4th graders complete 2006-07 Survival Kids
Fourth graders at Pine Forest Elementary School in Maumelle recently celebrated their completion of the 2006-07 edition of Survival Kids with a special assembly Tuesday, May 15.
Survival Kids is a series of monthly lessons taught by Maumelle firefighters in the fourth grade classrooms of Carla Norman, Fred Patton and Kim Wickliffe. In addition to the traditional education topics of the fire service -- fire and burn prevention, Survival Kids also includes such topics as bicycle safety, stranger danger & severe weather safety. The lessons are designed to challenge the students with interesting class work based in subjects such as English, science, math & history.
Earlier this month, students completed a final exam that included material from each of the seven lessons. Each student was then assigned an honorary fire department rank based on the number of subjects they mastered.

April 16, 2007:
City offered $1.7 million for police & fire site
The City of Maumelle has been offered $1.7 million for the 2.91 acres at Maumelle Boulevard and Millwood Circle that is the current home to the Maumelle Fire Department, police department and district court.
Greenstone Properties of Atlanta, GA made the offer to Mayor Mike Watson, who deferred the issue to the city council during their meeting Monday, April 16. The council voted 7-1 to explore its options relating to the offer and a public workshop to discuss the matter has been set for Monday, April 30 at City Hall. The property was appraised in December 2005 at $1.455 million.
City leaders have long been aware of the need to construct a new police station and two new fire stations to replace the current facility at 100 Millwood Circle. The current building has been remodeled numerous times, has limited room for growth and is not energy efficient. Additionally, firefighters need two stations located in each of the northern and southern halves of the city to maintain proper response times.
If the city decides to sell, they would have 30 months after closing the sell under the terms of the offer to continue using the police & fire building before having to vacate the property. To mainain response times, the city would have to construct two fire stations to replace the loss of the current one.
All interested citizens are encouraged to attend the public workshop scheduled for 6 p.m. April 30 in the Blue Room at City Hall.

Members of C-Shift presented with belated awards
As it came time to present awards to members of the Maumelle Fire Department during the annual Police & Fire Banquet April 6, the firefighters of C-shift headed out the door on a medical emergency to treat an assault victim and missed the presentation.
C-Shift was presented with their belated awards nine days later in an impromptu ceremony in the apparatus bay of the Police & Fire Building at 100 Millwood Circle.
Special guest Adrian Greene, vice chairman of the Maumelle Planning Commission, was in attendance at the afternoon gathering on Sunday, April 15. Greene presented Captain Tim Bullard, Engineer Michael Cossey, Firefighter Scott Eaton and Firefighter Shane Holmes with Meritorious Service awards. The four members of C-Shift responded to a medical emergency at Greene'e residence on October 18, 2006. Firefighters found Greene with agonal breathing and no pulse. The firefighters initiated CPR and administered one shock from their automatic external defibrillator. After a second round of CPR, Greene's heart was beating on its own. Soon after, he began to breathe without assistance.
Greene had been in attendance at the awards banquet to make the presentation, but was unable to because of C-shift's absence.
Other awards presented April 15 included the Career Firefighter of the Year honor presented to Eaton.
Also, three members of C-Shift -- Bullard, Eaton & Holmes -- were recognized for their efforts when a series of storms hit Maumelle on August 11, 2006. On that day, storm-related emergencies began occurring throughout the city. As crews finished with one scene, they were immediately dispatched to another. Holmes was filling in on-duty for a member of B-shift. Bullard and Eaton came in off duty to assist. They, along with other on-duty, off-duty and volunteer firefighters, responded to a variety of calls that included trees down on homes, fire alarms, a gas leak and a utility-line fire. In all, Maumelle personnel responded to 22 different calls for assistance in a span of six hours, setting the record for the busiest night in the short history of our department. Bullard, Eaton & Holmes were presented with the unit citation for their participation in the event. Other members of the department who participated and qualify for the unit citation are Engineer Charles Watson (who acted as captain that day), Firefighter Adam Swalls, Volunteer Captain Mark Landers, Volunteer Captain Ed Platt, Former Volunteer Captain Mike Watson (who resigned in December 2006 to become mayor), Volunteer Engineer Joel Galloway, Volunteer Engineer Kyle Howard, and Volunteer Engineer Larry Pruss.

Firefighters honored at annual awards banquet
Career and volunteer members of the Maumelle Fire Department were among those recognized during the annual Police & Fire Banquet Friday night, April 6. The banquet, which was twice interrupted by emergency calls for on-duty firefighters this year, is sponsored annually by the Maumelle Rotary Club and held at the Maumelle Country Club.
Awards presented during the banquet included:
Meritorious Service Award - When responding to a medical emergency on March 11, 2006, members of B-Shift found their patient unconscious with agonal respirations and no signs of a pulse. The firefighters initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation. After one round of CPR, the patient was reassessed and a pulse was found. Firefighters continued artificial ventilations until the patient eventually began to breathe unassisted. Presented with the Meritorious Service Award for their actions during the incident were Captain Drew Nichols, Engineer Charles Watson and Firefighter Jeremy New.
Meritorious Service Award - On the evening of April 8, 2006, Firefighter Austin Woody heard a Maumelle police officer call for help from inside the jail at the Police & Fire Building. Firefighter Woody went to help and, with Police Officer Alan Johnson, found a detainee attempting suicide by hanging. Firefighter Woody and Officer Johnson picked the subject up, lifting them off of the cords that were around their neck. Members of A-Shift then provided medical care to the patient. Presented with the Meritorious Service Award for his actions during the incident was Firefighter Austin Woody.
Meritorious Service Award - When responding to a medical emergency on October 18, 2006, members of C-Shift found their patient unconscious with agonal breathing and no pulse. The firefighters initiated CPR and administered one shock from their automatic external defibrillator. After a second round of CPR, the patient was reassessed and a pulse was found. Soon after, the patient began to breathe without assistance. Recognized with the Meritorious Service Award for their actions during the incident were Captain Tim Bullard, Engineer Michael Cossey, Firefighter Scott Eaton and Firefighter Shane Holmes. The members of C-Shift, who were on duty during the banquet, were on an emergency call during the awards presentation and were unable to accept their award.
Unit Citation - On New Year’s Eve 2006, members of C-Shift were dispatched to Fairway Drive to assist an injured police officer. Upon their arrival, firefighters found Officer Greg Roussie stabbed and bleeding on the front porch of the home after an altercation with a suspect. While police continued to struggle with the suspect inside the house, one firefighter entered the home and removed the knife used in the incident. This action helped make the scene safer for police and allowed firefighters and EMS to better estimate the extent of the officer’s injuries. Fire personnel rapidly accessed and began treatment of Officer Roussie’s injuries, allowing for him to be quickly transported to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Recognized with the Unit Citation for their exemplary performance as a group under the unusual nature, potential danger and adverse conditions presented by the incident  were Captain Tim Bullard, Engineer Michael Cossey, Firefighter Scott Eaton and Firefighter Shane Holmes. The members of C-Shift, who were on duty during the banquet, were on an emergency call during the awards presentation and were unable to accept their award.
Five-Year Service Recognition - Volunteer Captain Larry Pruss was recognized for five years of service with the fire department. Pruss has been a member since April 2001.
One-Year Service Recognition - Firefighter Jeremy New was recognized for completing his probationary year with the department. New was hired in July 2005.

Captain Tim Bullard (foreground) and Firefighters Dustin Jaco (far left) and Scott Eaton pull large diameter
hose off the street along the 30 block of Stoneledge Drive Tuesday, March 13. Firefighters used this hose,
which is five inches in diameter, to assist Maumelle Water Management by providing water for residents on
parts of Stoneledge Drive after a MWM neighborhood pump failed.
Engine 2 returns, assists MWM after pump failure
After more than 70 days out of service for repairs at facilities in both Arkansas and Tennessee, Engine 2 returned to Maumelle Tuesday, March 13 and didn't wait long to be put to work.
Still missing it's compliment of fire-rescue equipment and considered out of service for normal emergencies, Engine 2 was sent to Stoneledge Drive at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday afternoon to assist Maumelle Water Management after a failure at their pump house in that neighborhood.
Firefighters stretched several hundred feet of large-diameter hose along the side of the street to essentially provide an above-ground water main. Engine 2 was used to do the job of the pump house, pumping water for nearly six hours to the residents near the top of Stoneledge Hill.
One firefighter was slightly injured while preparing to reload the hoses back on Engine 2 after midnight Wednesday morning. He was treated for his injury at a local hospital and released.

Firefighter Scott Eaton displays his Little Rock Marathon medal -- certified by Runner's World magazine
as the largest in the country -- after completing the 26.2 course on March 4.
Maumelle firefighter completes first marathon
Firefighter Scott Eaton, of the Maumelle Fire Department's C-Shift, was among the 793 male runners to complete the Little Rock Marathon earlier this month.
Eaton, who only decided to start training for the race a few weeks prior, finished the 26.2 mile route through Little Rock and North Little Rock in six hours, 33 minutes and 20 seconds. It was his first time to participate in a marathon.
"It was the last week in January when I started running and saw that the marathon was a month away," says Eaton. "I thought that was plenty of time for someone as stubborn as me. A marathon was one of those 100 things I wanted to do in life."
Eaton said his marathon experience provided three important lessons.
"I learned that the body can be pushed way past what the mind thinks it can do, God did not design six-foot, six-inch, 225-pound people to run long distances and 26.2 miles is a long way!"

Soon to be a sign of the past...
Traffic Light Repair
Maumelle firefighters set-up Truck 1 in this February 2005 file photo so that an employee from
Maumelle Public Works can replace a bulb in the traffic light at Maumelle Blvd. & Millwood Circle.
Considering the maintenance associated with the addition of street lights along Odom Boulevard
and three new traffic lights along Maumelle Boulevard, the city council approved February 5 the
purchase of a bucket truck to be used by Public Works for such tasks.

South Odom Extrication
Maumelle firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the driver and lone occupant of this SUV
after the vehicle left the east-bound lanes of Odom South and struck a tree head-on Friday morning (Feb. 2).
MFD extricates one from SUV vs. tree collision
At 10 a.m. Friday morning (Feb. 2), Maumelle Police & Fire Communications received numerous 911 calls reporting a single-vehicle accidents near the intersection of South Odom Blvd. and Club Manor Drive. Maumelle firefighters responded and were on scene in less than three minutes. Upon arriving, they found a single vehicle with the occupant still inside.
Firefighters gained access to the driver and lone occupant through the back seat and immediately began emergency medical care. The front doors of the SUV were jammed shut during the collision -- when the vehicle left the eastbound lanes of South Odom and struck a tree head-on. Maumelle firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools -- commonly referred to as the "Jaws of Life" -- to force open the front driver door so the driver could be removed.
The driver was transported by Metropolitan EMS to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
The Maumelle Fire Department responded to 73 motor vehicle accidents in 2006, including four that required the use of the Jaws of Life to allow for the rescue of the occupant(s).

January 28, 2007:
North Little Rock pumper returns to service in Maumelle
No, the Maumelle Fire Department has not purchased a new fire engine. The "new" rig parked in Maumelle's fire station this weekend (Jan. 26-28) was the North Little Rock Fire Department's S-103 -- a 1985 Seagrave pumper on loan to the MFD.
The Maumelle fleet normally contains two engines (Engine 1 and Engine 2), an aerial ladder truck (Truck 1), a multi-purpose vehicle (Brush 1) and a mobile air unit (MAU). For nearly all of the month of January, however, Engine 2 has been out of service for repairs.
Saturday (1/28), the department scheduled a live burn exercise at the Conway Fire Department training tower with plans to take Truck 1, Brush 1 and the mobile air unit out of Maumelle for the all-day session. Without the loan of North Little Rock's pumper, this would have left only one piece of fire apparatus to protect the city of Maumelle.
This is the Seagrave's second tour of duty in Maumelle. It was first placed into service during September 2005 when the MFD once again found itself with only one working piece of structural fire apparatus. It was labeled Engine 3 and responded to six calls during a three-day period.
The need to borrow a fire engine from a neighboring city when Maumelle's own fleet became understocked first came to light on July 11, 2005. Truck 1 was the only piece of structural firefighting equipment that night when a house fire was dispatched on Maranes Circle. The hydrant that firefighters connected to was broken and Maumelle crews had to wait for an engine from North Little Rock to respond and supply water.

January 13, 2007:
Motorists are reminded to yield the right of way
Every year, Maumelle firefighters respond to more than 1,000 calls for service. Many of these calls are emergencies -- requiring quick response by the fire department to help save lives and property. Although most drivers are courteous and pull to the right for us, many drivers ignore the flashing lights, sirens & horns used by our apparatus to request the right of way.
Unfortunately, some drivers see these warning devices and still do not yield! These drivers try to beat the fire engine through an intersection -- considering their own travel more important than our emergency response.
The following video was filmed as Engine 1 responded to a medical emergency on Christmas Day. Although the engineer was using all of his flashing lights, two sirens and an air horn, one driver in particular refused to yield at the intersection of Club Manor Drive & Odom South Blvd.

As a reminder, Arkansas state law requires that "upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle, when the driver is giving audible signal by siren, exhaust whistle, or bell, the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to, the right-hand edge or curb..." Please obey the law and help us out... Stop & pull to the right for emergency vehicles!

Three are promoted within volunteer division
Fire Chief George Glenn announced Wednesday (January 10) three promotions within the Maumelle Fire Department's Volunteer Division.
The need for realignment came with the resignation of former Captain Mike Watson, who left the department at the end of 2006 and began his first term as city mayor January 1.
Captain Mark Landers, a member of the department since April 2002, was promoted to Training Officer for the division. Engineers Joel Galloway and Larry Pruss were selected to fill Watson and Landers' empty captain positions. Galloway has been a member of the department since May 2003. Pruss has served since April 2001.
